San Ildefonso Polychrome Jar by Carlos Sunrise Dunlap (1958-1981)

Carlos Dunlap was becoming well known for his large black-on-black jars when he died suddenly in 1981 at only 23 years of age. I've seen very few of his polychromes. This one is beautifully formed with a dramatic tapering to the base. The design includes rim checkerboards (similar to those painted by Florentino Montoya in the early 1900's) and then his typical joyous flourish of designs throughout the jar. What he would have become if he had lived longer!
