San Ildefonso Lidded Avanyu Jar with Polished and Unpolished Black Mica by Russell Sanchez
Exquisite jar, the newest of Russell’s polished black mica works. I count eight design fields, as well as alternating black and red areas and dots reminiscent of old San Ildefonso pottery designs. The squared-off lid is so organic to the jar that it’s not immediately clear where the jar ends and the lid begins. The triangular elements on the Avanyu are those of diamondback rattlesnake, adding a touch of drama and movement to the overall design. Superb work by the 2017 recipient of the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.
