Superb Zuni Polychrome Jar with Early Rainbird, c. 1880’s

Superb example from prestigious collection is superior from top to bottom. The black underbody still has the puki impression from the ceramic fragment used to stabilize the jar as construction began. The main body is well formed with an early high rounded shoulder. The rain bird, formed by parallel lines is fabulous, early and warm. The rim wear from ladle use shows a jar lovingly used for many years. Note that the rim is fully intact as the ladle was used and replaced with great care by even children; showing love and respect for a family heirloom. An important jar for a collection of great examples of pottery with pueblo use.
