Superb and Dramatic Santa Clara Oil Lamp Base, attributed to Serafina Tafoya, c. 1930
This is a fascinating and beautiful example by Serafina Tafoya (1863-1949), mother of legendary potter Margaret Tafoya. The jar itself is classic Serafina with clawed handles extending from shoulder to over the rim. According to family members Serafina did make lamps. The oil lamp inserts fits so perfectly that it’s very hard to argue that it wasn’t intentional. There is also residue in the neck. The effect is clearly dramatic.
