“Small”: Tesuque Polychrome Serving or Chili Bowl with Vertical Design Fields, c. 1880′s

A companion piece to the other great early Tesuque bowl in the “small” Show, this is another lovely example. It features unusual vertical design fields encircling the bowl beautifully and to great effect. Each field is separated by pairs of parallel lines for a spacious design that enhances the the elegant form of the bowl. The design elements themselves are simple: rain drops and lightening like thick lines, but soft, without sharp edges. The rich fire cloud and wide deep red band at the top of the underbody completes this masterpiece. Another gem waiting to be added to a distinguished collection of small 19th century pueblo pottery forms.

Condition: original, excellent, unrestored
