“Small”: Kewa (Santo Domingo) Polychrome Small Jar, c. 1890′s

$6,500.00

This is a superb Kewa small jar, 7 1/2″ tall by 7″ in diameter.  It has two distinct design fields; typical star forms at the top and a series of negative circular spaces encircle the mid-body, both drawn large to give this small jar a large and spacious feel.  There is a black rim with a line break and wide band at the top of the base, helping to date it to the 19th century.  Like many of the older small jars we have featured, this one is has ethnographic wear; patina, surface rubs; used but lovingly cared for with no cracks or chips.  All of this gives this jar a warm and friendly presence.  It is a delight, a near perfect example of this form.
