Santo Domingo Polychrome Double-Swell Jar, c. 1930

What an unusual jar for conservative Santo Domingo.  Very likely a train station, tourist trade piece, the form is 2 traditional ollas with flaring rims, “fused” one on top of the other.  Not at all easy to construct with clay coils! The very simple traditional painted design of black triangles and double framing lines serve to enhance our attention to the jar's eye-catching form.  Sheer fun fused with artistry.  Pueblo tourist pottery did not mean lack of sophistication. I love this.
Condition excellent and unrestored with some evidence of home use at inner rim
