Santo Domingo Dough Bowl with Warm Surface and Traditional Star Design, c. 1910

This is a beautifully rounded bowl with some wonderful details that reward us for looking closely. First there is a native wire and pitch repair indicative of a bowl well cared for in a pueblo home. The interior is slipped and polished to a lovely red sheen; the exterior has a warm surface from handling. There is also a very old interior tag: “OLD SANTO DOMINGO POT.” Finally, beneath the wide red underbody band is a blob of red slip, left there by the potter 100 years ago, perhaps as a signature on this fine bowl.

Size 10″ tall by 16.5″ diameter
Condition very good with native pinon pitch repair and very patinated mid-body chip
