Santa Clara Wedding Vase by Severa Tafoya (1890-1973), c. 1955

Severa was a well known and prolific potter of blackware in the first half of the 20th century. This piece dates to the 1950's-early 60's one of my favorite pottery periods at Santa Clara. Why? The pottery was nicely, but not overly polished; the forms somewhat less sophisticated then what would evolve in the '80's and to the present. What resulted then is pottery with a warmth and naivety that (to me) is irresistible. Traditional bear paw pottery was a favorite of Severa and this piece an understated charmer. I love this vase!
