Masterful Black-on-Red Olla with Ovals and Dots, attributed to Tonita Roybal, c. 1910

Figure 10. Beautiful wide body form with flaring rim and chained dots within ovals design, this jar stands apart from others.  It is thinly made and the red slip is fired a deep satisfying red.  Tonita learned from Dominguita Pino, her mother, a pioneer in black-on-red pottery.  Tonita's technique was superior.  Although less known than Maria Martinez, many collectors consider her to be Maria's equal.  This fine jar is a good example.
