Large Santo Domingo Lidded Storage Jar by Robert Tenorio, 2012

$8,500.00

NEW PRICE. WAS $10,500 Created for our St. Vincent's Hospital Benefit, this is a masterpiece by one of the most respected pueblo potters of the past 2 generations. Robert's methods and materials are all grounded in pueblo tradition even when he experiments in modern forms and designs. Lately Robert has been re-creating a long forgotten style: Santo Domingo black-on-red pottery from the early 20th century. This breath-taking example is in classic large storage jar form. It features 3 broad horizontal design fields of Geometrics and figures including a joyous array of folk-lore or story-telling symbols. These include a simple bird, a fancy turkey, a deer being pulled down a mountain by a young girl and a hunter wrestling an elk. The lid too is decorated including a delightful turtle on the inside. The spinach weed black fires deep black or more transparently completely depending upon the heat of the natural firing. This is historically consistent with what we see on old examples. A superb example by one of pueblo pottery's most distinguished and beloved ceramic artists.
