Laguna Polychrome Olla, c. 1880’s

$14,500.00

This is a simply superb Laguna polychrome water jar dating to the mid-1880′s or earlier. It is painted orange and black against a creamy white slip that forms a luscious backdrop for the classic Laguna design. The all-over abstract design features bisected leaf forms and triangles with “eyes” that help to keep the design light and in movement. The leaf and triangle elements are always enclosed within the spaces formed by the swirling orange rainbow bands that continuously flow around the jar. The white slip is carried to the very top of the jar.
But these are just details. This olla is warm and rich and has what experienced collectors of the finest in pueblo pottery might call “presence”. In fact, I’ve had a difficult time figuring out where to display it in the gallery; despite its simple elegance, it draws the eye and overwhelms adjoining work.
19th century Laguna polychome ollas are among the most desired examples of fine pueblo pottery. This jar will be a showcase in a collection of exceptional historic pueblo pottery.
