This is a charming singing mother, a classic rendition by Marie G. Romero (mother to Maxine Toya and grandmother to Camilla and Dominique Toya) a beloved pottery maker and teacher. Marie taught pottery at Jemez for many years and is considered the mother of this figurative tradition at Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico. The shawl is both matte and polished red. The cradled baby appears to be singing, too. Delightful.
