Hopi Large (Huge!) Utilitarian Plainware Canteen, c. 1890

A trip from the mesa top to gather water and then return required a significant ceramic; thus this magnificent canteen. Depending on how you observe it, the canteen has a typical maternal form or looks like a large turtle or a mud head, but either way it is a stunning ceramic. Sometimes called a snake or rattlesnake canteen from alleged usage in Hopi snake dances. This was made by a skilled and exceptional potter.

Size 15″ high by 12″ wide by 11″ deep
Condition Some cracking in wide back area had an old Hopi resin repair. I have professionally stabilized it as well
Provenance purchased from Deb Neal in Scottsdale

A magnificent canteen.
