Exquisite Deep Zia Dough Bowl, c. 1870
With a plethora of traditional design elements, this exquisite bowl dates to the 1870's or earlier. The early dating is partly wear, but more so the less tapered, more squared off lower mid-body to base (see figures 13.22 and 13.27 in Harlow and Lanmon's The Pottery of Zia Pueblo). The rim flares noticeably and a lovely fire cloud accentuates the red/orange base (where a band may or may not have been intended). The surface is richly patinated from many years of pueblo home use. The inner bowl is polished and deep red. A gem pure and simple!
Size 10 1/2″ deep by 18″ diameter
Condition no restoration, rich patina from ethnographic wear
