Early Cochiti Bear Figure, attributed to Damacia Cordero, c. 1940’s

Predating the Cochiti storyteller figures, this wonderful little bear was purchased by the present owner's parents in the early 1950's. According to the owner's parents, it appeared to be old then. I am guessing it's an early rendering of a bear by Damacia Cordero, a well known mid-century potter born in 1905. Like Damacia's typical animal forms, it has a long torso and her typical coffee bean eyes. Later Seferina Ortiz and Louis Natanjo would popularize the bear storyteller form. The bear is in original condition decorated very sparely with squares and triangles.
