Tewa Large Black Olla with Dramatic Fire Clouds, c. 1890

An argument could be made that this stunning 19th century Tewa olla with elegant form and dramatic clouds could be from any of several pueblos. The clouds suggest San Juan; the double rainbow bands, Santa Clara; and the form unusual for either San Juan and Santa Clara, so San Ildefonso is possible. It doesn’t really matter. This is a beautiful and unique jar, even more dramatic due to its size. A special and highly collectible olla.

Condition is very good; a small nest of light scratches; no chips or restoration.
