Acoma or Laguna 4-5 Color Olla, c. 1900

Among the most desireable of historic potteries are Acoma 4 color jars. This is a particularly fine example. It is well formed and thinly potted with a pie crust rim and high gently rounded shoulder. The designs are plentiful and complex with berries, triangles both rounded and true, parallel lines and cross hatching arrayed in upper and lower fields separated by zig zag triple rainbow or lightening bands. The colors are rich and delicious, 4 of them (red, yellow, black and white) actually intented by the potter. A nice brown emerges as a 5 color as we follow the orange rainbow around the jar; a gift of the natural firing process. This is a fine and beautiful ceramic at an especially reasonable price.

Condition excellent and unrestored
Provenance A Santa Fe family
